Iqra Hasan Choudhary is a prominent Indian politician and a member of the Samajwadi Party. She serves as the Member of Parliament for the Kairana Lok Sabha constituency in Uttar Pradesh, having won the seat in the 2024 general election.

Iqra Hasan Choudhary hails from a deeply entrenched political family in Western Uttar Pradesh. Her lineage is a significant factor in her rise to prominence. Her grandfather, Akhtar Hasan, was a two-time Member of Parliament. Her father, Chaudhary Munawwar Hasan, was a four-time MP and also served as an MLA. Her mother, Begum Tabassum Hasan, also held the Kairana Lok Sabha seat as an MP. Her elder brother, Nahid Hasan, is a three-time Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from the Kairana assembly constituency.

Born in Shamli, Uttar Pradesh, Iqra Hasan attended Welham Girls’ School in Dehradun before earning a Bachelor’s degree from Lady Shri Ram College for Women in Delhi. She pursued higher education abroad, completing a Master of Arts in Politics with a focus on International Law from SOAS University of London. While she initially planned to pursue a PhD, she returned to India to support her family during a time of political turmoil, which ultimately led to her full-time entry into politics.

Iqra Hasan Choudhary is recognised for her active legislative work and her ability to connect with voters across the political spectrum. Her contributions in the Lok Sabha are well-documented, with a record of participation in 25 debates and asking 78 questions on a wide array of subjects. Her legislative efforts have focused on a range of issues, including agricultural welfare, the supply of fertilisers for farmers, and the establishment of a trauma centre and railway lines in her constituency. On a broader scale, she has addressed critical topics, including the Forest Rights Act, the prevention of mob lynching, and the need for increased budgetary allocations for minority education.

Her public image is characterised by a mix of her educated background and her deep connection to the grassroots. She is widely seen as a sincere and articulate leader who campaigned on a platform of development and social harmony, successfully challenging the prevailing communal narratives in her region.
