Begum Tabassum Hasan is an Indian political activist and former Member of Parliament from the Kairana Lok Sabha constituency in Uttar Pradesh. She is best known for her role in the 2018 by-election, where she became a symbol of opposition unity. Her political journey is deeply intertwined with her family, which has established a strong political dynasty in the region.

Born in 1970, Begum Tabassum Hasan belongs to a prominent political family in Kairana. She is the daughter of Akhtar Hasan and the wife of the late Chaudhary Munawwar Hasan, a distinguished politician who achieved the rare distinction of being elected to all four houses of the Indian legislature: the Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha, Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly, and Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council.

The political legacy of the family continues through her children. Her son, Nahid Hasan, is a three-time Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Kairana, while her daughter, Iqra Choudhary, is the current Member of Parliament from the same constituency. Following a period of her husband’s and son’s political activities, Begum Tabassum Hasan stepped into the political arena to continue her family’s legacy.

Begum Tabassum Hasan has been associated with multiple political parties, reflecting the shifting alliances in Uttar Pradesh politics. She has served as a Member of Parliament on two occasions.

  • 15th Lok Sabha (2009-2014): She first won the Kairana seat in 2009 on a Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) ticket.
  • 16th Lok Sabha (2018-2019): Her most significant political victory came in a 2018 by-election. Following the death of the incumbent MP, she was fielded as a joint candidate of the opposition, including the Samajwadi Party, Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD), and Bahujan Samaj Party. Her victory was widely seen as a major setback for the ruling party and was celebrated as a symbol of Hindu-Muslim unity and the success of a united opposition. She served the remainder of the term as a member of the Rashtriya Lok Dal.

During her terms in Parliament, Begum Tabassum Hasan was active in raising questions on issues of concern to her constituency and the country. Her parliamentary record, particularly in the 15th Lok Sabha, shows her active participation in debates and questions relating to agriculture, infrastructure, social welfare, minority affairs and foreign relations.
