Syeda Bilgrami Imam (born 9 November 1941) is a multifaceted Indian writer, advertising stalwart, and public servant whose career spans over five decades. Born in Hyderabad, she belongs to the distinguished Saadat-e-Bilgram lineage, a family of Sayyid scholars and administrators who played pivotal roles in the intellectual life of the Deccan. Her great-grandfather, Nawab Imad-ul-Mulk Syed Hussain Bilgrami, was a co-founder of the All-India Muslim League and a pioneer of education in Hyderabad, while her relative Sir Syed Ali Imam served as the first Prime Minister of Hyderabad State. This deep-rooted legacy of scholarship and public service significantly shaped her professional trajectory.
Imam’s academic excellence was evident early on. After her family moved to Mumbai when she was fifteen, she attended the prestigious Elphinstone College. She earned a B.A. (Honours) in English Literature, ranking first in Bombay University. Her academic prowess led to an appointment as a Fellow of English Literature at the university, where she taught at the Honours level for two years before transitioning into the world of creative communications.
Advertising, Literature, and Public Service
In the advertising industry, Imam rose to become a formidable leader, serving as the Executive Creative Director for the Indian subcontinent at J. Walter Thompson (JWT). She was instrumental in the growth of Contract India and led creative teams across India and Central Asia. While she managed major corporate brands, her most impactful work occurred in public-service advertising. Her award-winning campaigns on communal harmony, public health, and the rights of the girl child received international acclaim, including screenings at the Cannes and New York film festivals.
In parallel with her advertising career, Imam established herself as a significant literary voice. Her best-known work, The Untold Charminar: Writings on Hyderabad (2008), is a celebrated anthology exploring the syncretic culture of her birthplace. Her bibliography also includes The Making of Advertising, documenting the legacy of Subhas Ghosal, and her 2023 release, Like Fine Wine, which explores the romances of notable Indian couples. She has also edited spiritual and social volumes such as HU: The Sufi Way and The Positive Side.
Syeda Bilgrami Imam’s commitment to social equity extended into formal governance. She served for six years as a Member of the National Commission for Minorities, focusing on education and communal amity. Her public service includes roles on the National Hajj Committee and various sub-committees for the Ministry of Human Resource Development. A recipient of the Indira Super Achiever Award and the Chishti India Harmony Award, she continues to consult on creative communications for nation-building and social welfare.
