Neelima Azeem is a distinguished figure in Indian arts, celebrated for her talents as an actress, classical dancer, and writer. Over a career spanning several decades, she has made significant contributions to film, television, and theatre, while also being known as the matriarch of a prominent Bollywood family, being the mother of actors Shahid Kapoor and Ishaan Khatter.

Born on December 2, 1958, in Patna, Bihar, Azeem comes from a creative and intellectual lineage. Her father, Anwar Azim, was a respected journalist and Urdu author, and her mother, Khadija Azim, was related to the acclaimed director K.A. Abbas. Immersed in the arts from a young age, she pursued formal training in the classical Indian dance form of Kathak under the tutelage of legendary gurus like Birju Maharaj and Munna Shukla. This rigorous training established her as a formidable performer, and she has graced the stage at numerous classical dance festivals.

Azeem began her acting career in the late 1980s, quickly gaining recognition for her compelling performances. One of her early standout roles was as Mumtaz in the critically acclaimed 1989 film Salim Langde Pe Mat Ro. During the same period, she became a familiar face on Indian television, starring as Shehnaz in the popular Doordarshan drama Phir Wahi Talash (1989–1990). Throughout the 1990s and beyond, she continued to appear in a variety of films, including Sadak and Hahakaar. In a notable role, she played the mother of her real-life son Shahid Kapoor’s character in his debut film, Ishq Vishk (2003). Her later film work includes roles such as Zeher Raza in Alif (2016) and Nabi in Majaz: Ae Gham-e-Dil Kya Karun (2017). Embracing modern platforms, she has also featured in web series like Mom & Co. (2019) and Halala(2019).

Azeem’s personal life has also been a subject of public interest. Her first marriage was to actor Pankaj Kapur from 1979 to 1984, with whom she had her son, Shahid Kapoor. She later married Rajesh Khattar, and together they had a son, Ishaan Khatter. Azeem has spoken openly and candidly about the challenges she faced, particularly raising her children as a single mother during her younger years.
