Professor Qudsia Tahseen is a pioneering Indian nematologist and a celebrated figure embodying the educational principles of the Aligarh Movement. Born in Azamgarh, Uttar Pradesh, in 1964, she overcame significant cultural barriers that discouraged women from pursuing professional careers. With the strong encouragement of her enlightened parents, she excelled academically from a young age, earning a merit scholarship that paved her way to higher education.

Her distinguished career is deeply rooted in Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), where she arrived to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Zoology. Her academic brilliance shone through as she secured Gold Medals for both her M.Sc. in Zoology and a Diploma in Statistics. She then entered the field of nematology under the guidance of the eminent Professor M. Shamim Jairajpuri, completing her Ph.D. in just three years.

Professor Tahseen’s early career was marked by perseverance. Appointed to AMU’s Women’s College in 1989, she worked for nearly 14 years without an independent laboratory, a significant handicap that limited her ability to mentor research students. The turning point came in 2003 when, after her transfer to the Department of Zoology, she finally secured her own lab, catalysing a highly productive research career. Her scientific work focuses on the taxonomy, biodiversity, and developmental biology of terrestrial and aquatic nematodes. A landmark achievement of her research was the discovery of Acrostichus medius, a transitional roundworm species that provided a crucial link between two different nematode genera. Her extensive research has resulted in over 90 publications in prestigious international journals.

Her contributions have earned her widespread national and international acclaim. In 2005, she became the first Asian to receive the ONTA Special Award for sustained excellence in Nematology. She holds the rare distinction of being a Fellow of all three of India’s national science academies: the Indian Academy of Sciences, the Indian National Science Academy, and the National Academy of Sciences, India. Her global stature is further affirmed by numerous prestigious fellowships from institutions in the UK, Germany, and China, and by her recent appointment as the National Committee representative for the International Union of Biological Sciences (IUBS). In January 2025, she was appointed Chairperson of the Department of Zoology at AMU.

Professor Tahseen’s journey is a powerful testament to the Aligarh Movement’s vision for women’s education. As the first woman from AMU to be elected a Fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences, she has shattered glass ceilings and become an inspirational role model. A dedicated mentor featured in compilations of India’s top women scientists, she continues to nurture the next generation, embodying a legacy of scientific excellence, resilience, and the empowerment of women in science.
