Jahan Ara Janbaz is one of the most distinguished female vocalists in contemporary Kashmiri music. A leading exponent of the light-classical “Chalant” style, as well as folk and devotional genres, she has been a defining voice at Radio Kashmir Srinagar (now AIR Srinagar) for over three decades. Trained from a young age by her legendary father, the poet-singer Ghulam Nabi Doolwal “Janbaaz Kishtwari,” she has built a career dedicated to both preserving her rich artistic lineage and advancing Kashmiri music for modern audiences through her own digital label, JAJ Records.

Jahan Ara was born into a family deeply immersed in art and literature in Dool Hasti, Kishtwar, in the Chenab Valley. Her father, Janbaaz Kishtwari (1925-1990), was a pioneering artist who introduced the unique Chalant idiom to Kashmir. Her mother, Khurshida Begum, while not a public performer, contributed to a home environment steeped in Kashmiri and Urdu literature and Sufi practice.

This rich cultural atmosphere shaped Jahan Ara and her siblings, including her sister Alam Ara Janbaz, who also became an approved AIR artist. Under her father’s direct tutelage, Jahan Ara began performing in her teens. Her talent was formally recognised when she passed the highly competitive All-India Radio audition while still in college, launching her professional broadcasting career after the family settled in Srinagar.

Since the early 1990s, Jahan Ara Janbaz has been an “A”-graded vocalist at AIR Srinagar. Her versatility is a hallmark of her career; she performs fluently in Kashmiri, Urdu, and Hindi, covering a wide spectrum of genres. Her repertoire includes the light-classical ghazal, traditional folk ballads like Chakri and Rouf, and devotional Sufi kalām and Naat.

Her stature has led her to represent AIR Srinagar at prestigious national concerts, including the Akashvani Sangeet Sammelan and the “Shaam-e-Ghazal” series. Beyond performing, she plays a vital institutional role as a regular jury member for AIR auditions, where she actively mentors emerging artists, particularly those from her native Chenab Valley.

Musical Style and Key Contributions

Jahan Ara Janbaz’s work is notable for its impact across four key areas:

  1. Preservation of “Chalant” Style: She is the most prolific female exponent of Chalant, a style blending Kashmiri folk rhythms with Hindustani classical melodic structures. She has recorded over 200 Chalant titles, securing her place in the canon of Kashmiri music.

  2. Revival of Her Father’s Oeuvre: She has undertaken the monumental task of setting dozens of her father’s unpublished poems to music. By releasing them on digital platforms with annotated Kashmiri scripts, she ensures the textual and melodic fidelity of his work for future generations.

  3. Enhancing Women’s Artistic Visibility: Music scholars list her among the select group of women—alongside pioneers like Raj Begum, Shameema Dev, and Kailash Mehra—who were instrumental in transitioning female voices from private domestic spaces to professional public broadcasting.

  4. Bridging Cultural Regions: Through outreach concerts and tours in Kishtwar, Doda, and Bhaderwah, she has actively extended mainstream Kashmiri light-music circuits into the Chenab Valley, fostering greater cultural integration.

Her contributions have been widely recognised with several honours, including the Raj Begum Women Empowerment Award (2018) for her “path-breaking role” in popularising Kashmiri music, a Certificate of Merit from the AIR Directorate (2015), and the Best Female Playback Singer award at the J&K Cultural Festival (2009).

Her influence continues to grow. Her label, JAJ Records, has successfully digitised a vast corpus of music, with releases like the folk ballad Tchalay Mea Pay earning over a million views on YouTube. Her legacy is being cemented through her ongoing field recording projects for the J&K Cultural Academy’s folk archive and the inclusion of her catalogue in university music syllabi. Furthermore, a new generation of singers, including Raja Bilal and Zahida Taranum, publicly acknowledge her as a formative mentor.
