Dr. Fauzia Tahseen Khan is a trailblazing figure in Maharashtra’s political landscape, widely recognised as the state’s first Muslim woman to serve as a minister. Born on February 19, 1957, in Aurangabad, she has dedicated over two decades to public service, with a focus on politics, education, and social work.

Dr. Fauzia Khan is a highly educated individual, holding a PhD, an MPhil, and a master’s degree in English Literature from Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University. Her extensive academic background, which also includes a postgraduate certificate in teaching English from the Central Institute of English and Foreign Languages (CIEFL) in Hyderabad, has equipped her with the knowledge and skills necessary for her multifaceted career.

Dr. Fauzia Khan’s political journey began in Parbhani, where she contested and was elected President of the Parbhani Municipal Council. She gained prominence after her impressive campaign caught the attention of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar. She was subsequently appointed a Member of the Legislative Council (MLC), serving two terms from 2002 to 2008 and from 2008 to 2014. During her second term as an MLC, she made history as the first Muslim woman to serve as a Minister of State in the Government of Maharashtra, holding key portfolios such as School Education, Women & Child Development, and Minorities Development.

Her exemplary performance continued in the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Indian Parliament, where she has been a Member of Parliament since 2020. She has been recognised for her outstanding parliamentary work, achieving a 100% attendance record—significantly higher than the national average of 80%. Beyond her political roles, Dr. Fauzia Khan has been a staunch advocate for education and women’s empowerment. She also played a crucial role in identifying a 332-acre site for the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) Maharashtra Centre.
Her work for women’s empowerment is exemplified by the “Parivartan” program, which she started in 2006. This annual event in Parbhani has hosted over one lakh women, featuring workshops, training sessions, and stalls to empower them economically and socially. She continues to organise “Parivartan Pathsanstha” for Women’s Self Help Groups and the “Parivartan Bazar” to provide platforms for women’s economic participation.
