Born in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, Mehru Jaffer was immersed in a creative and intellectual environment from a young age. Her mother was the acclaimed actress Farrukh Jaffar, known for her memorable roles in films like Gulabo Sitabo and was one of India’s first female radio announcers. Jaffer’s most significant contributions lie in her literary works, which make complex spiritual and historical subjects accessible to a broad audience. Her reputation is largely built on her trilogy on Islamic spirituality, published by Penguin India.

  • The Book of Muhammad offers a compassionate biography of the Prophet, focusing on his universal message of kindness.
  • The Book of Muinuddin Chishti and The Book of Nizamuddin Aulia delve into the lives and teachings of revered Sufi saints, exploring their messages of love and humanity and their role in the development of Chishti Sufism in India.

Her profound connection to her hometown is another central theme in her writing. Books like Love and Life in Lucknow and A Shadow of the Past are evocative explorations of the city’s multicultural legacy, architectural beauty, and historical evolution. Her most recent work, From the Love Lanes of Lucknow (2024), continues this passion, celebrating the rich tradition of Urdu poetry in the Awadh region.

Parallel to her writing, Jaffer has built a notable academic career in Austria. She taught courses on Islam in South Asia and Gender and Religion at the University of Vienna and the Vienna American Webster University. She has also contributed to academic publications and moderated workshops on Indian cinema. Her creative ventures include documentary filmmaking, with “Mr Khan Vienna Loves You,” a film about Shah Rukh Khan’s European fanbase, screened at an international conference at the University of Vienna.

Mehru Jaffer’s writing is characterised by its accessible scholarship, blending rigorous research with engaging and imaginative storytelling. She masterfully synthesises cultural and religious traditions, consistently emphasising universal themes of love, mysticism, and compassion. Her work acts as a vital bridge between different faiths and cultures, promoting a deeper understanding of India’s Sufi heritage.
