Professor Naima Khatoon is a distinguished academician who made history in April 2024 by becoming the first woman Vice-Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) in its more than a century of existence. Her appointment marks a pivotal moment for gender representation in the leadership of one of India’s most eminent educational institutions.

Born in Odisha, Professor Khatoon’s path to academic prominence was marked by early challenges. She had to overcome significant family opposition to leave her home state to pursue higher education at AMU in 1977. Supported by her mother’s resolve, she broke with conservative family tradition, a move that foreshadowed her future as a trailblazer. Upon arriving at AMU, she faced cultural and linguistic hurdles but persevered, completing her Bachelor’s degree and subsequently earning a PhD in Political Psychology. Her doctoral research focused on the complex dynamics of Hindu-Muslim youth integration, demonstrating an early commitment to addressing pressing socio-political issues.

Her professional career is deeply rooted in AMU, beginning with her appointment as a lecturer in the Department of Psychology in 1988. Through dedicated service and scholarly achievement, she progressed to Associate Professor in 1998 and full Professor in 2006. Her experience was broadened by an international teaching stint at the National University of Rwanda. Before her appointment as Vice-Chancellor, she served for a decade as the Principal of AMU’s Women’s College, a role that honed her administrative skills and deepened her commitment to women’s education. A prolific scholar, she has authored and edited several books, published numerous research papers, and mentored 15 doctoral students, with specialisations in Clinical, Health, and Spiritual Psychology.

Professor Khatoon’s appointment as Vice-Chancellor faced a legal challenge, which the Allahabad High Court ultimately dismissed in May 2025. The court upheld the integrity of the selection process and lauded her appointment as a “major stride for gender representation.” Since taking office, her leadership has been characterised by a vision of inclusive excellence. She has initiated significant reforms, most notably revitalising faculty recruitment by securing approval for 35 new teaching positions, the first such expansion since 2012. Under her stewardship, AMU has also seen improvements in campus infrastructure and achieved a notable 5th position among Indian institutions in the U.S. News Global Rankings 2025.

Professor Khatoon’s journey from a determined young student overcoming societal barriers to a transformative leader embodies the power of education and resilience. Her leadership not only enhances AMU’s academic and international standing but also serves as a powerful symbol of women’s empowerment in Indian higher education. Her legacy is defined by her unwavering commitment to institutional progress, academic excellence, and forging new paths for future generations of women leaders.
