Parveen Kaif is a distinguished Indian Urdu poet born in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, in 1956. She comes from a family with a deep literary heritage, as she is the daughter of the renowned Urdu poet and film lyricist, Kaif Bhopali. Her father, who wrote the iconic song “Chalo Dildar Chalo” for the film Pakeezah, was her direct mentor and trained her in the art of poetry from a young age.

Kaif has a strong academic background, holding a Ph.D. for her research on her father’s literary contributions. Her dissertation focused on Kaif Bhopali’s poetic legacy, showcasing her dedication to preserving and analysing his work.

In 2013, she published her poetry collection, Safar Ek Umr Ka (Journey of a Lifetime). The book, released at a launch event in Bhopal, was well-received and published by the Halqa-e-Arbab-e-Adab, a respected Urdu literary organisation. Her poetry touches on a range of themes, including love and longing, social issues, women’s experiences, and nostalgia. She also explores philosophical and spiritual topics. Her ghazals, such as “Kuchh Main Kah BaiThun KHuda-na-KHwasta” and “Ab Wo Aangan Wo Ghar Na Khaprelen,” are popular among Urdu poetry fans.

Parveen Kaif’s contributions to literature have earned her several honours, including recognition from the Madhya Pradesh Urdu Academy. She has received multiple awards, such as the Samata Pratibha Samman, Rashtriya Hindi Sevi Millennium Award, and the Narmada Award.

Beyond her writing, she is a prominent figure in the Urdu literary community. She serves as the Vice President of Bazm-e-Kaif Bhopali, an organisation dedicated to her father’s legacy. This group hosts regular poetry gatherings and events, including the annual “Jashne Kaif Bhopali” celebration. Kaif is also a well-known participant in mushairas(poetry gatherings), both in India and internationally, having performed at over 150 events. Some of her notable appearances include the Indo-Pak Mushaira in Bhopal and the Vishwarang Literary Festival.

She is an active member of the Urdu Academy of Madhya Pradesh (Bhopal) and the Madhya Pradesh People’s Writers Association, affiliations that highlight her deep involvement in promoting Urdu literature. As the literary heir to Kaif Bhopali, she has successfully continued his poetic tradition while establishing her own unique voice. Her work represents the continuation of the “Bhopali school” of Urdu poetry, and she has been a key figure in keeping her father’s memory alive through her scholarly research and active participation in literary events.
