Sussanne Khan, born on October 26, 1975, is a distinguished Indian interior and fashion designer, recognised for her entrepreneurial ventures and significant contributions to the design industry. She hails from a prominent Bollywood family; her father is the veteran actor-producer Sanjay Khan, who has Afghan and Iranian roots, and her mother is Zarine Katrak Khan, a former model and interior designer of Parsi descent. Growing up in a creative environment, she is the sister of jewellery designer Farah Khan Ali, interior designer Simone Arora, and actor Zayed Khan. Her extended family includes her uncles, actors Feroz and Akbar Khan, and her cousin, actor Fardeen Khan.
Khan pursued her passion for design by earning an Associate of Arts degree in Interior Design from Brooks College in California around 1995. Following her education, she gained practical experience by apprenticing under notable designers before launching her own career in 1996. Her professional trajectory took a significant leap in 2011 when she co-founded The Charcoal Project in Mumbai with Gauri Khan. This venture was pioneering, establishing itself as India’s first interior fashion design store that uniquely blended curated décor, bespoke furniture, and high-end artistic collaborations. The brand’s success led to its expansion with a new outlet in Hyderabad in early 2025.
Throughout her career, Khan has achieved several milestones. In 2012, she became the first interior fashion designer for the e-commerce lifestyle platform, The Label Life. She also played an instrumental role in launching the Mumbai campus of the Pearl Academy in 2014, where she helped establish scholarship programs for aspiring students. A major international recognition came in 2015 when she was appointed as the first Indian creative director for YOO, the prestigious global design firm co-founded by Philippe Starck and John Hitchcox.
Her work has garnered numerous accolades, including a nomination for Interior Designer of the Year by Quintessentially Asia Pacific in 2011, the ET Panache Trendsetter Award in 2016, and being honoured as Asia’s Most Influential Designer at the 2019 DOTY Awards in Kuala Lumpur.
In her personal life, Sussanne Khan married actor Hrithik Roshan in December 2000. They have two sons, Hrehaan, born in 2006, and Hridhaan, born in 2008. The couple’s divorce was finalised in November 2014, but they have maintained a notably amicable relationship, co-parenting their children together. Since 2022, she has been in a relationship with actor Arslan Goni. Born into a Muslim family, Khan has expressed a pluralistic view on religion. She has spoken about raising her children to respect both her Islamic faith and their father’s Hindu traditions, emphasising the importance of embracing the positive values from both religions rather than adhering strictly to one.
