Dr. Zeenat Shaukat Ali is a prominent Indian scholar and professor of Islamic studies at St. Xavier’s College in Mumbai, who has made profound contributions to interfaith dialogue, women’s empowerment, and Islamic education. Through her dedicated academic work and tireless activism, she has become a leading voice for gender justice and religious harmony in India.
Born into an affluent and intellectually secular family in Mumbai, Dr. Ali’s academic path was deeply influenced by a pivotal personal tragedy. The sudden death of her father led her to find solace and purpose in the teachings of the Quran. With the strong encouragement of her husband, Shaukat Ali, she committed herself to her Ph.D. studies, embarking on a lifelong journey to explore and articulate the core values of her faith.
As a professor, Dr. Ali has focused on addressing what she saw as a “deafening silence” among scholars in accurately representing Islam to the wider nation. Her expertise in Islamic jurisprudence, particularly as it relates to women’s rights, marriage, and divorce, has been highly influential. She is not confined to academia; she translates her principles into action through unique peace initiatives. As the head of the World Institute of Islamic Studies for Dialogue, Organisation of Mediation and Gender Justice (Wisdom Foundation), she works to promote understanding between different faiths. One of her most notable initiatives involved organising a cricket match at Mumbai’s Brabourne Stadium, bringing together Muslim, Hindu, and Christian clerics to foster camaraderie and dialogue.
Dr. Ali is also an accomplished author whose books have been instrumental in advocating for women’s rights within an Islamic framework. Her most notable work, The Empowerment of Women in Islam (1997), is a scholarly examination of the status and rights of women, with a particular focus on marriage and divorce. Other significant publications, such as “Marriage and Divorce in Islam (An Appraisal)” and the edited volume “Winning the Peace: A Quest,” further reflect her commitment to applying Islamic teachings to contemporary social issues.
Her outstanding contributions have been recognised with several prestigious accolades. In 1997-98, she received the Vijaya Shree National Award for “Education Enriching Human Life and Outstanding Attainment.” In 2016, her work promoting peace and non-violence through her foundation was honoured with the Mother Teresa Memorial International Award for Social Justice. These awards underscore Dr. Ali’s significant and lasting impact as a scholar and activist dedicated to building a more just and harmonious society.
